Slieve Gullion forest park is located at the base of Slieve Gullion, a mountain which lies at the heart of the Ring of Gullion. The formation that forms the Ring of Gullion has been officially designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Formed from the remains of an eroded volcanic complex, Slieve Gullion is the highest point in county Armagh with an elevation of 573 meters.

Facilities

The forest park offers visitors modern and first class facilities including our amazing courtyard café and purpose built visitors centre. The car-park can cater for 120 car and 4 full-size coaches, it is important to note that the car park can fill up quite early and quickly and will be closed once it has reached its capacity. We would advised all visitors if possible to avail of public transport when journeying to the forest park. Translink operate a Rambler Service from Newry to Slieve Gullion please call Translink for an up-to-date timetable.

Events

Face Painting and Fun

Kick off the Christmas celebrations with a children’s face painter. The face painter will be in the cafe for 3 hours on Saturday the 12th of December and all proceeds from the event will go to local charities.

Teddy Bears Picnic

A teddy bears picnic will be held in the picnic area of the playground of the forest park. The picnic will take place on Saturday the 2nd of January and all parents and children are encouraged to take along a teddy bear and join in the fun and games.

Coffee Morning in aid of local charities

A coffee morning will be held in the cafe in the forest park on Tuesday the 5th of January. Tea and coffee along with a selection of sandwiches will be served during the event. All proceeds will go to local charities.

Winter Solstice Festival – Cairn Illumination Hike

Join us for a guided hike to the summit of Slieve Gullion to experience the passage tomb being illuminated by the setting sun. The hike will start at 2:00pm on Saturday the 19th of December. Please note that this event will be depended on the weather and will be cancelled if the weather is bad.

Winter Solstice Festival – A magical experience with fairies, elves trolls and giants

As part of the winter solstice celebrations here at Slieve Gullion, we are organising guided tours of the giant’s lair. There are three walks to choose from – 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm. Each walk will take approx. 1 – 1 hour 15 minutes.

Winter Solstice Festival – solstice Stories & Craft

Join us for a children’s basket weaving workshop to be held in the forest park cafe. This event is for children with an interest in art and crafts and would like to learn about basket weaving. Entertainment on the evening will be from the Armagh Rhymers.
